    • Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is a Department of Navy engineering organization that specializes in submarine maintenance engineering. The primary mission is the overhaul, repair and modernization of Los Angeles-class and Virginia class submarines. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard provides the U.S. Navy's nuclear powered submarine fleet with quality overhaul work in a safe, timely and affordable manner. This includes a full spectrum of in-house support--from engineering services and production shops, to unique capabilities and facilities, to off-site support--all of which serves the multifaceted assortment of fleet requirements. As an engineer you will be working on the Navy’s most sophisticated platform – the nuclear powered submarine.

PNS is one of four remaining naval shipyards in the nation.  Centrally located about 50 miles from Boston, Massachusetts, Portland, Maine and Manchester, New Hampshire, at the southernmost tip of Maine, the Shipyard fully encompasses Seavey Island that sits at the mouth of the Piscataqua River.  This federally-owned island is across the harbor from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with access to the mainland by two bridges that connect to Kittery, Maine.  Nearby there is access to salt and fresh water activities – boating, white water rafting, fishing, skiing, beaches and concert venues.  Portland, Maine has consistently been ranked as one of the best cities to live in.

PNS is the most experienced naval shipyard in submarine design, construction, modernization, and maintenance, and has a key role in the very-deep ocean submersible and special operations arenas.  Today the Shipyard’s primary mission is the overhaul, repair, modernization, and refueling of Los Angeles Class and Virginia class nuclear powered submarines.

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Cradle of American Shipbuilding, was established in June 1800 and is the oldest continuously operated naval shipyard in the U.S.  The Shipyard is located in the Piscataqua River Estuary, between New Hampshire and Maine, where in 1690 the first naval warship in North America was built.  Since being designated as the ‘Submarine Yard’ in 1917, PNS has been on the leading edge of submarine development and maintenance.  We work on some of the most sophisticated warfighting platforms ever developed.  At Portsmouth Naval Shipyard we are proud of our past and ready for the future.
